Letting Go of The Past

This is a comical sight. Stanley Zbornack, who can't let go of his first true love Dorothy- despite hurting her over and over again, and Dorothy letting him. Stan finally transfers his feelings for Dorothy to a 'monkey' through the help of his psychiatrist- and eventually (I don't want to ruin it for you) but if you have seen the last few episodes of The Golden Girls- and let's face it- you've had plenty of time to since the showed last aired 19...

But the actual reality is not so funny. Stanley and Dorothy find themselves enmeshed in years of back and forth, neither able to truly move on from one another, despite knowing they are not a healthy match.

Stanley finally lets go, and Dorothy rides off into the sunset so to speak with her new husband- Lucas Hollingsworth - and we won't talk about how dirty Dorothy was done in that hideous wedding dress!

She is finally free of Stanley, and of everything that held her down and back. Dorothy was often the brunt of many jokes on The Golden Girls-and after binge watching the series multiple times, I feel as though the entire point of Dorothy's story arc, was she was holding herself back. Yes, she had to care for Sophia- but time and time again, Sophia showed us all how capable she was- and definitely not a boring old lady.

She had her moments and Dorothy stuck by her- but in the end- Dorothy had to break free and live her own life. It was a bitter sweet moment when both Stan and Dorothy had to let go of each other- and the past- and I think is so many ways it healing for so many to accept this truth.

No matter where we have come from in life- no matter where we are going- we all have a past- and sometimes it can creep into our present, and never let us really reach a peaceful future, until we make peace with it.

Letting go of the pain, the guilt, the grief, whatever it may be, the what ifs, the maybes, is the only way we can truly move forward and live a peaceful life. But, it isn't always that simple.

It can be a long, drawn out painful journey-as it was with Stan and Dorothy- but eventually, they did get there. Any journey begins with a single step, a single action, and although, if you start today, you may not find yourself there tomorrow, just remember you're in this for the long haul- it takes time to fix anything, health issues, broken hearts, it all takes time.

So, just remember to be kind to yourself today, and know that the rest of your life starts today!
